Another quality performance saw Corby Town take over at the top of the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central table.
The Steelmen began the game with the confidence you would expect from a team fresh from a 6-0 drubbing of the previous leaders in their last fixture. Jordan Crawford was heavily involved in Corby's early attacks, almost getting on the end of a deep Jordan Francis centre, hitting an angled drive across goal and providing the cross from which Connor Kennedy hit an effort from the edge of the box straight at former Corby goalkeeper Nick Bennion. This was, in fact, the third successive home game in which the opposing 'keeper was an ex-Steelman - Bennion following Yaxley's Ollie Sutton and Dan Crane of Bromsgrove Sporting.
So it came as something of a shock when Aylesbury took the lead with a classic goal on the break. The visitors cleared a Corby attack out to Temi Oladejo on the left wing and he made rapid progress deep into Corby territory. His centre was chested down by Aaron King to Reece Bayliss and he smashed home to finish off a swift and effective counter attack and give the moles the lead.
The Steelmen took this minor set back in their stride and quickly levelled the scores when King inadvertently headed a Crawford corner back towards his own goal and Joel Carta crashed in a close range effort.
Elliot Sandy then had a header ruled out for offside and Francis took the ball round Bennion but was forced too wide to get a shot on target. Francis did not have to wait long for his second goal in as many games, however, as a 39th minute mix up between Bennion and his central defenders on the edge of the penalty area allowed the Corby winger to stroke the ball into the empty net.
The first half ended with Kennedy being shown a yellow card for a foul on Craig Carby and Sam Grouse firing in a shot which only just cleared the crossbar.
Having got their noses in front at the interval Corby once again seized the initiative at the start of the second half. The Steelmen quickly opened up a two-goal lead when Grouse sidefooted home from a Crawford centre and Bennion then made a smart save from Crawford.
Referee Robbie Dadley waved away appeals for a penalty when Crawford went down under the challenge of Bennion but minutes later the Bedworth official did point to the spot when Sam Warburton was sent sprawling by Jordan Jenkins as he burst into the box. Carta stepped up to take the kick but although he sent the goalkeeper the wrong way he rolled the ball inches wide of the post.
Bennion failed to gather a long range shot by Greg Ling cleanly and although he did claim it at the second attempt the Corby forwards had obviously taken note as when he repeated the action from a Carta effort Sandy reacted quickest to prod in the loose ball to make it 4-1 in the 78th minute.
Minutes later Sandy made it five with a diving header from another Crawford centre and although Martin Griggs somehow managed to force in a second for the visitors in the final minute despite being a lone yellow shirt surrounded by Steelmen it was job done at the final whistle as Corby looked down from the summit of the league table. Now all they have to do is stay there until the end of April!
