AFC DUNSTABLE 2 CORBY TOWN 1

Elliot Sandy stepped up to stroke home his 29th goal of the season.

Despite having secured third spot some weeks ago two successive defeats have left Corby Town sweating on achieving a good enough record to gain promotion should they win the play offs.
Jack Newell, Elliot Sandy and Steve Diggin all returned after missing last week's home defeat by Welwyn Garden City and there was a surprise place on the bench for Jake Bettles whose last appearance for the Steelmen was back in December.
Corby began the game brightly enough with a Sam Warburton free kick being headed behind for a corner and Joel Carta having a fierce shot blocked inside the penalty area. Neither of these efforts troubled Dan Green and when the Dunstable goalkeeper was called into action it was to make a comfortable save from Jordon Crawford.
The game briefly came to life after twenty minutes when a clash between Nathan Frater and Carta had the Corby supporters baying for a red card for Frater for an apparent head butt. Referee Mr Wayne Chalmers consulted his assistant who was closer to the incident before issuing just a yellow card.
With three minutes of the first half remaining a Dunstable corner was cleared out to Kyle Ajayi out on the left wing. He was brought down by a combination of Crawford and Carta and the free kick taken by Martel Powell was side footed past Dan George by Grant Fryer.
That appeared to be that for a generally lacklustre first half but deep into injury time Fryer went from the host's hero to villain when he brought down Steve Diggin from behind inside the area and Elliot Sandy stepped up to stroke home his 29th goal of the season from the penalty spot.
The game rarely rose above mediocre during the second period with goal scoring chances again being few and far between. In the 53rd minute Crawford made a good run down the left wing and set up Warburton inside the box for a shot which was palmed away by Green. Diggin flicked a header narrowly wide, again from a Crawford assist, and the late introduction of Bettles added some fresh energy to the Corby attack.
Just as the game appeared to be meandering to a draw the home side struck their 85th minute winner. Jamie Anton blocked an attempted cross from BJ Christie out for a corner and from the kick Ajayi rose at the far post to head in - much to the delight of Dunstable's players and supporters who still have hopes, although, slim of sneaking into the promotion play offs themselves.
