CORBY TOWN 5 NORTH LEIGH 2

no-one was going to get the ball off of Crawford as he stepped up to send Cavanagh the wrong way from the spot and complete his hat-trick.

The Steelmen went into this game without injured top scorer Elliot Sandy and unavailable skipper Gary Mulligan but were still too strong for the division's bottom markers. In the absence of Mulligan the captain's armband was handed to Connor Kennedy.
Before kick off there was a minute's applause for ex-Corby manager Eric Caldow and former youth team coach Dave Henderson who had both passed away recently.
The first chance of the game fell to the visitors and Corby 'keeper Dan George had to be alert to keep out an angled drive by Tyriq Hunte at his near post.
Corby were quick to reply with Jordon Crawford hitting a shot high over the bar after Millers' goalkeeper Eddie Cavanagh had saved a Steve Diggin effort with his legs and Joel Carta doing likewise after another Diggin shot had been blocked by a defender.
It all came good for the Steelmen in the 12th minute, however, when Crawford played the ball in from the right wing, Jordan Francis knocked it down and Carta sidestepped a defender on the edge of the penalty box before hitting a low shot past Cavanagh into the net.
Six minutes later Corby doubled their lead with Francis again claiming an assist as he laid the ball into the path of Crawford who found the top corner of the net from just outside the box.
Corby were forced to make a substitution before half time when Francis picked up an injury and made way for Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson in a like-for-like change.
Early in the second half a wind-assisted Crawford corner was cleared off the line at the back post by Jordy Ngathe and Alfie Grant and Cavanagh combined to prevent a Crawford centre from reaching the unmarked Diggin in front of goal.
Just in case Corby felt it was becoming too easy they were given a bit of a jolt in the 53rd minute when a defensive mix-up allowed Josh Pin to cross to Hunte who made it 2-1.
The two-goal advantage was restored in the 67th minute when Sam Warburton and Fortnam-Tomlinson combined down the left and the latter's centre was turned in by Crawford and nine minutes later Corby added a fourth.
Diggin was bundled over in the box by Del Peart as they challenged for a Warburton cross and although Diggin had thoughts of taking the penalty himself no-one was going to get the ball off of Crawford as he stepped up to send Cavanagh the wrong way from the spot and complete his hat trick.
Diggin finally got the goal his efforts deserved - his fifth in six games - in the 84th minute when he glanced in a header from a Crawford centre which Cavanagh should really have saved.
There was still time for Corby to gift Hunte a second goal for the visitors but with the points securely in the bag and a match ball claimed by Crawford it was of little consequence.
