AYLESBURY UNITED 1 CORBY TOWN 2

Steve Diggin nodded in the Steelmen's second.

Corby Town travelled to Chesham to take on Aylesbury United with the twin objectives of picking up the three points which would secure third place and scoring the three goals which would take them to one hundred in the league.
The Steelmen went into the game without Northampton Town loanees Camron McWilliams and Jack Newell who were both injured and with Delroy Gordon restored to the starting line up.
In the opening seconds the Steelmen won a corner which was cleared and in the second minute Jordon Crawford curled an effort just wide of the post. Aylesbury responded with efforts by Tre Mitford and Harry Jones which were well saved by Dan George.
After the game had settled down Corby took the lead in the 34th minute with Sandy rising to loop in a header following an excellent left wing centre by Sam Warburton. As half time approached Aylesbury manager Ben Williams was appealing to his players to keep the interval deficit to a single goal but in the 44th minute Joel Carta crossed from the right and Steve Diggin nodded in the Steelmen's second.
Three minutes into the second half George clutched a corner and cleared the ball quickly upfield. It fell to Sandy inside the penalty area and although he didn't strike his shot cleanly the ball struck the post and rolled across the goalmouth with no Steelman close enough to knock it in.
Corby created another opportunity in the 50th minute when Diggin drove a centre across goal but again there was no one in a blue shirt to knock it in.
The Steelmen could have been out of sight but on the hour it was game on when the hosts pulled a goal back. Teenaged substitute Collins Takaitie teed up the impressive Max Hercules and his centre was headed in by Jones.
In the 73rd minute Corby again went close to scoring their 100th league goal of the season when Connor Kennedy fired in an effort from distance which crashed down off the crossbar and Anthony Ball did just enough to prevent Sandy from heading in the rebound at the expense of a corner which came to nothing.
Five minutes later George did brilliantly to tip a Mitford effort onto the bar after Jack Wood had headed down a left wing centre by Callum Mapley to deny Aylesbury an equaliser. The Ducks created one further opportunity in the 85th minute when Corby scrambled an effort by young Takaitie off the line.
The Steelmen may not have been at their very best but they deserved the victory which guaranteed them third place and a home game in the play off semi final with four games of the regular season remaining.
