CORBY TOWN 2 YAXLEY FC 3

"Unacceptable" - Steve Kinniburgh.

Manager Steve Kinniburgh described this performance as "unacceptable" and no-one of a Corby Town persuasion who witnessed this lifeless Buildbase F.A Trophy exit would disagree. Long before the final whistle the Steelmen appeared to have accepted their fate and showed little appetite for the fight as their supporters headed for the exits.
It was a completely different story early on, however, as Corby looked set to make comfortable progress in the competition.
Dan Cotton hit an early free kick well wide in the opening minutes but for the remainder of the first half the visitors relied on long balls out of defence - with Dan George twice racing out of his penalty area to clear the danger.
Corby finally got it right in the 36th minute when some good play down the left set up Sam Grouse who hit his shot into the bottom corner of the net for his first goal for the club.
At half time the talk was of adding to that advantage but in the 49th minute the Steelmen defence went awol and gave Tom Waumsley the freedom of Steel Park to head in a left wing centre to level the scores. It then got even worse for Corby a few minutes later when Yaxley centre forward Waumsley was again in the right place to shoot past George to make it 2-1.
The Steelmen were then thrown a possible lifeline when substitute Jake Bettles went down under the challenge of Josh Pike. Referee Mr Ryan Williams initially awarded Corby a free kick just outside the area but after consulting his assistant the Coventry Official pointed to the spot and Sutton dived one way while Carta stroked his penalty into the opposite corner of the net.
The anticipated late onslaught of the visiting goal failed to materialise, however, and it was Yaxley who struck the deciding goal. Dean McBride nodded the ball off the line after George had failed to claim a corner but the Steelmen were unable to clear their lines and Cotton set up Matt Sparrow for an excellent finish.
