Steelwomen Win At Home Against Top Of The League

For Temporary Manager Phil Toon, games don’t come much harder as our Corby Town Ladies took on top of the league Desborough Ladies.

1st half our steelwomen came out the blocks quickly and from kickoff caught Desborough cold and Amy had her first shot inside 30 seconds. However this dominant start was short lived as in the first 15 minutes Desborough started to take control of the match and in particular within the midfield area. However with some excellent defending our steelwomen kept Desborough at bay. After 15 minutes a tweak to the midfield and personnel and player of the match Tinto took control of the midfield and Taylor’s instigated press helped our steelwomen to take control of the match, our steelwomen had a number of clear cut chances from Amy and Beth in particular and with some composure in front of goal could and should have gone in at half time ahead however the half finished 0-0.

After a team talk and discussion on the press and midfield, the second half started as first had ended our steelwomen on the front foot. Hannah started to take control in those defensive midfield areas which enabled the team to get their passing movements going and this changed Desborough’s tactics to try and keep our midfielders off the ball, again changes enabled us to counteract that change and the pace of Amy and Taylor were a thorn in the side of Desborough all game. Our steelwomen had an array of chances in the second half but our shots were either inches wide or straight at the keeper but then the all important goal!!! Our steelwomen deserved the lead and got themselves ahead. A great move down the right wing and shot from Courtney, a fumble by the keeper and we were ahead. Desborough then changed formation to get that all important goal and the game started to become open, however another change to sure up the midfield to try and ensure the game was Corby’s. Towards the end of the match there were few saves from Georgia and some excellent last ditch defending to keep Desborough at bay and that all important win for our steelwomen.

Every player played their part today and there were some outstanding displays from our defensive, midfield and attacking lines. Was great to see at times a team in tune with each other and with the number chances created the score line didn’t reflect the overall dominance.

Was great to see our steelwomen try and implement Phil’s philosophy and although it will take a bit of time for our steelwomen to get use to the changes, you could see those changes in what was an excellent game, performance and well deserved victory.
