Corby Town Ladies v Brackley Town Saints

With Steel Park needing at least 1 more day of rest it was decided that today’s game would be played at Tresham College on the Astro. We knew this would be harder for the team with the run of the ball however today the ladies managed the change in conditions well.

1st half our steelwomen took the game to Brackley, we tried to keep our width to stretch Brackley’s defence on what was a very wide pitch and the first goal came from a great shot from Megan that hit the bar then post and dropped invitingly for Taylor to stab home for 1-0. This then rallied Brackley who to be fair are a great passing side and they started to take control of the middle. A few tweaks to try and find the right balance for Corby meant a string of changes, then the right balance was found and we started to take back control. Then arguably goal of the season from Tinto an excellent solo goal as the ball come in a flick over the onrushing defender and half volley into the top corner. Stunning goal!!!! This gave us renewed confidence and shortly after a free kick on the edge of the box and hard struck shot that the keeper couldn’t handle and it was 3-0. Then a post hit for Beth who was close to making it 4 but wasn’t to be. Brackley had their chances but our defensive line stood strong and a great save from Georgia to keep the scoreline 3-0 at the break.

We wanted our steelwomen to keep their composure in the second half and not become complacent. Both teams again had their chances with a back post sitter just over the bar for Corby and some good saves from both keepers. Brackley changed shape and went more attacking to get back into the game. This opened up the wings and both Maddie and Megan had great joy on the wings and we were unfortunate not to be further ahead.

Brackley played counterattacking and were again themselves unlucky not to be in the score sheet with a string of saves from Georgia to keep the clean sheet intact.

A great win for our steelwomen that now puts them into the automatic promotion spots and only 1 point of the summit. A great game of football from both teams playing football in the right way. That’s 6 wins in 6 for 2024. Well done steelwomen, let’s keep the momentum and look for not just automatic promotion but getting into that top spot.
