The in-form Jake Bettles struck two second half goals to give Corby Town a Steel Park victory over play-off contenders Chasetown. Manager Steve Kinniburgh gave a first start to Zac Allen and the teenager was quickly involved in the action. The Steelmen had early appeals for a penalty waved away by referee Mr Scott Tallis when the ball appeared to strike Chris Baker on the hand as he cleared from Allen.
It was the visitors who took the lead in the 11th minute - although the goal was of Corby's own making. Bettles lost possession in Chasetown territory and an unwise attempt at a crossfield pass by Dean McBride put Danny Cocks in the clear. The winger was sent tumbling to the ground by Dan Smith's challenge but the Steelmen goalkeeper was spared punishment as Baker fired the loose ball into the empty net.
Dino Tuskar and Bettles both had shots comfortably saved by Curtis Pond and seven minutes before half time the Scholars' goalkeeper dived low to his right to deny Allen.
Play then switched to the other end, where Baker shot across the face of goal and just past the far post.
Corby began the second half in the ascendancy with Jordan Crawford having a shot saved by Pond in the opening minutes. Steelmen 'keeper Smith then made a telling contribution as he blocked a shot by George Cater and scooped the ball away from visiting skipper Jack Langston before Paul Malone completed the clearance.
Pond then made routine saves from Ashley Robinson and Crawford before Corby equalised in the 64th minute. Sam Warburton did well to get in a cross from the byeline which found Bettles who controlled the ball before hitting a low shot into the net.
The winning goal came with ten minutes remaining and finished off the best move of the match. A Chasetown corner was cleared to Connor Kennedy on Corby's right and he hit an excellent crossfield pass to Crawford. He in turn found Steven Leslie who played the ball on to Philip Trainer on the edge of the penalty box. Trainer played a neat pass through to Bettles and he again fired the ball past Pond.
