CHASETOWN 3 CORBY TOWN 2

David Tilley2 Feb 2022 - 20:14

STEELMEN SLIP TO DEFEAT

Corby Town matched their high flying hosts for much of this Pitching In Northern Premier League Midland Division fixture but still returned from Chasetown empty handed. Gary Mills was able to name a "same again" starting XI with new signings Ben Garwood and Sam Moore on the bench.
The first chance of an eventful game fell to Corby, home goalkeeper Curtis Pond pushing Elliot Sandy's shot round the post.
There was then a moment of confusion when the referee stopped the game and spoke to the two benches. With no obvious offence having been committed no-one knew the reason for the stoppage until Chasetown kitman Dave Harrison went into the dressing room and returned with an armful of red shirts and shorts. It seems the match officials were having difficulty distinguishing Chasetown's blue strip from Corby's purple so the home side had to change into their away colours. The hosts were the first to threaten upon the restart as Liam Kirton had a shot cleared off the line.
The Steelmen then had the ball in the net when Jordan O'Brien's close range effort was blocked by Pond and rebounded in-off Luke McGinnell but O.Brien's initial contact was correctly ruled offside.
As the interval approached Corby could lay claim to having been the more impressive side but the game was turned on its had during the final four minutes of the half.
There appeared to be little danger when Lewis White rose to meet a long ball out of the home defence but the Steelmen centre half headed the ball backwards and it looped over goalkeeper Ben Heath and into the net.
Things got even worse two minutes later when Corby failed to clear a right wing corner decisively and as the ball was returned into the penalty area Ryan Wynter headed in the Scolars' second.
What Corby needed was a quick reply at the start of the second half and they got it in the 54th minute when Joe Curtis volleyed in his first goal for the club.
Chasetown restored their two goal advantage in the 66th minute, however, when Curtis Hartley brought down John Atherton inside the penalty area and Jack Langston sent Heath the wrong way from the spot.
The Steelmen refused to admit defeat and scored their second of the afternoon when Sandy, who had earlier curled an effort wide after catching Pond out of position, lobbed the goalkeeper.
In the short time that remained Corby put the home goal under immense pressure. Substitute Sam Moore shot over from just inside the six yard box, White had a backheeled effort saved by Pond with Moore closing in to take advantage of any mishandling by the 'keeper and Pond palmed a fierce Peter Abimbola shot round the post.
