Corby Town recovered from conceding an early goal to record their biggest Pitching In Northern Premier League Midland Division victory of the season at home to relegation threatened Histon.
Steel Park was stunned into silence when some slack defending allowed Finley Wilkinson to shoot the Stutes in front from close range in just the second minute. Histon's celebrations were short lived, however, as just four minutes later Sam Moore, leading the line in the absence of the suspended Elliot Sandy, chipped the ball over visiting goalkeeper Sam Roach for the equaliser - his first goal for the Steelmen.
Corby then went ahead after sixteen minutes, Lewis White heading powerfully in via the underside of the crossbar following a right wing corner taken by Connor Furey. Another five minutes in the Steelmen extended their lead. Another corner from the right by Furey fell to James Clifton on the edge of the penalty area and his mis-hit shot was turned in by the left foot of White.
With just twenty three minutes on the clock it was 4-1. After soaking up a short spell of Histon pressure Corby broke decisively down the left and the ever-involved Furey slotted the ball past Roach. The visitors complained bitterly that Charlie Lewis had been fouled in the build-up to the goal but referee Mr Karl Donaghey waved aside their protests.
A few minutes later Jordan O'Brien found himself in a similar position but he was unable to get the desired curl on his shot and it passed harmlessly wide. Kamy Apindia Gille then set up an opportunity for Ben Garwwod but he also shot off target.
White then almost achieved the perfect hat trick of header, right foot, left foot was acrobatically kept out by Roach who grabbed the ball at tghe second attempt as Furey moved in menacingly.
The Steelmen did score a fifth on the stroke of half time. Furey picked up the ball inside his own half and burst forward into visiting territory. He played it out to Garwood on the right and his deep centre was laid off by O'Brien to Clifton who netted with ease.
During the half time interval there was much speculation about the likely final score. Suggestions ranged from a 6-5 defeat to a double figure victory. As it was there was to be just one more goal in the second period scored by the Steelmen in the 78th minute.
Two Furey centres from the left were blocked and the ball was switched to the opposite flank, from where Curtis Hartley's pin-point cross was headed in by Clifton. Co-incidentally, Clifton had scored an almost identical goal in Corby's 5-3 F.A Trophy victory over the same opposition earlier in the season.
Corby completely dominated the second half but Histon defended better, getting in a decisive tackle or timely block whenever the Steelmen threatened. Moore could have added to the total when he rode a possible foul challenge outside the penalty area but fired his final shot high and wide.
The Steelmen's commanding lead allowed Gary Mills to give teenagers Lewis Kennedy, son of former skipper Gary, and Jack Kuspert a brief taste of first team football. At the other end of the scale this was Gary Mulligan's final appearance before his move to Harborough Town.
