PATIENCE PAYS OFF AS STEELMEN WIN

PATIENCE PAYS OFF AS STEELMEN WIN

David Tilley6 Oct 2019 - 17:22

CORBY TOWN 2 BIGGLESWADE FC 0

Frustration turned to jubilation as Corby played a game of patience to finally pick up all three points against a resilient Biggleswade FC at Steel Park.
Centre half Charlie Wise headed wide from the game's first corner and Jordan Crawford hit a shot narrowly off target when another flag kick was only cleared to the edge of the penalty area.
Crawford went even closer to opening the scoring with an effort which was pushed onto the post by Biggleswade goalkeeper Tyler Josephs and Steve Diggin got in behind the visiting back line to lob Josephs but his goal was ruled out by a dubious offside decision.
Greg Ling was revelling in a more attacking role than usual and he got to a through ball ahead of the goalkeeper but his header took him too wide and he could only shoot into the side netting. Minutes later Ling was again only inches away from getting a decisive touch to another defence-splitting pass as the Steelmen continued to dominate.
Skipper Jake Duffy, who covered every blade of grass in an energetic ninety minute performance, had one shot from the edge of the box parried to safety by Josephs and hit another over the crossbar.
At the other end Josh Carpenter - in for the injured Dan George - had to make just one save of note from Kieran Barnes during a first half of almost total Corby dominance.
The second half began in a similar fashion as Diggin again lobbed Josephs but saw his effort clear the crossbar.
Biggleswade's resistance was finally broken when they reduced to ten men in the 67th minute. Matt Richardson resorted to illegal means to stop Rev James in his tracks and although it was a relatively innocuous challenge it was probably deserving of a yellow card. Unfortunately for Richardson he had already picked up a yellow earlier in the game - leaving referee Mr Jacob Lehane with little option to produce a red card.
Almost immediately the visitors struggled to clear a Duffy free kick and when the Steelmen skipper played the ball back into the penalty area Nathan George headed it up into the air under pressure from Joe Burgess. As it dropped close to the penalty spot Wise - who had gone up for the original set-piece - showed the poise of a centre forward to fire in a perfectly executed volley which flashed into the net.
Having been showed the way to goal by a centre half Corby's lone striker Diggin took it upon himself to score an even better goal just three minutes later. A right wing centre by Burgess was cleared as far as the edge of the box and goal machine Diggin volleyed in a screamer which Josephs didn't even see as it flew into the net.
The game was now won but referee Mr Lehane had the final word with just three minutes remaining. There seemed nothing in it as Corby's Gary Mulligan clashed with Biggleswade substitute Adam Drakulic but the official saw something that no-one else did and showed both players a red card.
