Corby Town's Under-18 team made progress into the Second Qualifying Round of the F.A Youth Cup with a 3-2 win away to Daventry Town Under-18s on Thursday September 21st. With Shay Brown proving a handful for the Daventry defence from the first whistle Corby had a number of dangerous early attacks with wingers Troy Clark and Tanaka Govha creating chances for Brown and Adelin Tomsa. But when the breakthrough came after twenty minutes it arrived via a set piece. Kyle Hutchinson was fouled on the edge of the Daventry penalty area and although the Corby skipper will have taken better free kicks the home goalkeeper allowed the ball to slip through his hands and his legs.
It was to the young keeper's credit that he was able to recover his composure and have a decent game thereafter. But there was little he could do just before half time when Govha's shot from the left took a slight deflection off a defender for Corby's second. That goal gave the Steelboys a 2-1 half time lead after Daventry had earlier equalised.
Corby seemed to be well on the way to victory when centre forward Tomsa made it 3-1 early in the second half but the goal that would have put them out of reach eluded them. The closest they came to a fourth was when substitute Harvey Staniszewski slid in to push a close range effort against the foot of a post.
As the game entered its final minutes Daventry did scramble in a second goal but it proved too little, too late and it was the Steelboys who progressed into the Second Qualifying Round and a tie away to Newport Pagnall Town Under-18s next month.
