Corby Town's disappointing start to the new season continued with their league campaign beginning with a home defeat. The Steelmen went into the game without the injured Joel Carta and with Elliot Sandy again only making the bench.
Craig Hill was quickly into the action, comfortably fielding a weak shot by Ollie Hogg and then - in the 20th minute - reacting instinctively to keep out a close range effort from Juwon Akintunde. The Steelmen's keeper was also the victim of late challenges by Max Hercules and Akintunde, the latter's name going into the referee's notebook.
Corby were struggling to get into the game as an attacking force and efforts by Steve Diggin and Jordon Crawford failed to trouble Aylesbury goalkeeper James Weatherhill.
The game's only goal came six minutes before the interval. A shot by Akintunde looped up off a Corby defender and the ball fell invitingly to Hogg who despatched a volley high into the net from the edge of the box.
The visitors' continued to create opportunities throughout the second half although most of Corby's problems were of their own making. Jordan Fowler was booked for wrestling Hercules to the ground but fortunately the resulting free kick came to nothing. Hill presented an opportunity to Ty Deacon which the visiting striker struck against the post and an attempted clearance rebounded off Sam Warburton and passed just wide of the upright. Even when the Steelmen won a corner it almost resulted in an Aylesbury goal as the visitors broke away quickly and again forced Hill into a save.
Crawford and Jordan O'Brien both had attempts blocked and substitute Matty North hit a long range effort straight at Weatherill. Steve Diggin did get the ball into the net in the 73rd minute but an offside flag cut short any thoughts of a Corby celebration.
The arrival onto the field of Sandy in the 64th minute did add a bit more aggression to the Corby attack but he took this a little too far when a late challenge on Weatherill earned him a yellow card in the final minute.
