LOUGHBOROUGH DYNAMO 2 CORBY TOWN 1

"O'Brien was in the right place to find the net from close range".

The life of a goalkeeper is rarely dull. Just ask Ben Heath. From penalty saving hero one week to spot kick conceding villain the next - the Corby Town custodian rapidly went from one extreme to the other. But Heath's faux pas at Loughborough was only part of the reason why the Steelmen left the Newton Fallowfield Stadium empty handed. The inability to convert numerous presentable goalscoring opportunities was equally culpable.
A successful afternoon seemed in store for the Steelmen when they took the lead after just six minutes. Sam Moore did well to win the ball on the right wing and when Dynamo goalkeeper Jason Alexander could only get fingertips to his low centre from the byline Jordan O'Brien was in the right place to find the net from close range.
Corby totally dominated the early stages and could, perhaps should, have added to their lead. A second goal was not forthcoming, however, and against the run of play the home side snatched an equaliser in the 22nd minute. Corby conceded a free kick out wide on the right and as everyone in the centre anticipated a high cross Loughborough skipper Danny Gordon drilled in a low shot which evaded defenders and attackers alike as it arrowed into the bottom corner of the net.
A Steelmen victory still appeared highly likely until Loughborough took the lead after 58 minutes. Heath ventured out of his goal to challenge Kevin DaSilva Bastos but the Loughborough winger got to the ball first and a push by the Corby 'keeper sent him crashing to the ground. Referee Mr David Hinton showed Heath a yellow card and awarded a penalty which DaSilva Bastos converted himself.
Shortly after this the home side thought they had added to their lead before having the 'goal' ruled out in bizarre circumstances. As Loughborough celebrated Corby players looked to the linesman as they appealed for offside. He resolutely kept his flag down but when Mr Hinton went across to speak to him the flag suddenly went up. Who needs VAR!!
That was one of a number of decisions which had both sides baffled. Indeed, Mr Hinton more often than not settled for the compromise of a drop ball. But the antics of the officials should not detract from Corby's inability to test Alexander after the early goal being the main factor in their defeat.
