Bedworth United 2-3 Corby Town

It was looking comfortable, the three points were heading to Steel Park and the visitors were pressing for more goals! And then it almost turned into a nightmare!

The match started with Bedworth on the front foot, buoyed by their first win of the season at the weekend. The best chance for the hosts came when Richard Blythe played a call up to Mitchell Piggon, his flick was into the path of Alexander Troke but the striker could not untangle his feet and get a shot off when inside the Corby box.

This seemed to wake the visitors up, a free kick from skipper Duffy caused mayhem in the box, the ball finally breaking to John Dean who got his shot off and was blocked on the line by Captain Elliot Parrott, everyone in the box of a Corby persuasion were adamant it was via the arm of the defender but referee Richard Cattell was not interested!

Corby then appealed for a peanlty again, this time a cross was diverted behind for a corner that the Steelmen believed came off the arm of a Bedworth defender. The corner from Duffy was whipped in under the cross bar, Crane managed to punch clear as far as Jordon Crawford, whose volley was deflected yards wide from goal. Goal kick awarded!

Corby were growing into the game, Crawford with a deep cross that Dean could only slice wide, while Piggon found time and space to turn and get a volley off that sailed over the bar.

But the deadlock was finally broken just before the half hour mark, Dan George goal kick made its way out to the right wing where Stephen Diggin made time and space to fire in a low cross across the area that JORDON CRAWFORD smashed into the foot of the net!

There was just enough time for the Corby players to celebrate and take their positions before they added a second. Charlie Wise played the ball again to the right wing, JOHN DEAN send the left back into a spin before lifting the ball over Dan Crane and into the far corner.

Bedworth finished the half stronger but Corby dealt well with the threat and went into the break with a two goal advantage for the 2nd midweek in a row!

Bedworth United 0-2 Corby Town - Half Time

Piggon was looking most threatening for the hosts, again finding time and space around the area but a sea of light blue shirts dived in the way to snuff out any threat.

Up the other end and James Ireland played in Stephen Diggin but he took a second too long deciding what to do and Dudley got back and done enough to put the striker off and prevent a certain 3rd!

Richard Blythe took aim from range and his effort was going well wide before Piggon back healed the ball towards goal and Dan George got down quickly to make his first meaningful stop of the match!

Straight up the other end Diggin made a smart run into the hosts area but could only curl his effort just over the top corner!

There is a saying in football that sometimes there is a great foul and a great booking! This was not one of them!

Diggin got the ball out on the right and played it into the path of James Ireland. With only the keeper to beat, Ireland was pulled back just outside the area by Luke Rowe and managed to prevent what seemed a certain goal! The only surprise that followed was the colour of the card was yellow and not red as Rowe was the last man and made no attempt to win the ball!

This would have been a fantastic take one for the team moment, if only they had kept out the free kick!

Skipper JAKE DUFFY stepped up 20 yards from goal and expertly curled his effort low and hard and beyond the dive of Dan Crane to make it 3-0 to Corby! Two goal of the season contenders, two fantastic yet different free kicks, two goals not captured by CTTV! But the next one will be ;)

Corby looked to be seeing the game out at a canter, and it should have been 4-0 on 80 minutes!

A through ball into the Greenbacks half was in between Diggin and Ireland, it was Diggin who got on the end of it and rounded Crane before rolling the ball home. Sadly for the Steelmen and for Digs, he was adjudged to have been in an offside position, and if Ireland had of taken the ball on, he was infact on side!

As usually happens, Corby were made to pay for this second later, substitue Ashanti Pryce squaring the ball for Piggon to get one back.

And then in the 87th minute, Pryce made it 2-3. Corby switched off at the back, the ball breaking back across goal for the sub to poke home and make it a one goal game!

Corby were having horrid flashbacks to last week at Bedford, and tried wasting time in the corner, but Bedworth won a free kick on the half way line which everybody, including Crane, went up for. The free kick was cleared and led to a flurry of throw ins out on the left wing but the Steelmen managed to clear their lines and see the game out with their on succession of corners infront of the technical area!

So a comfortable 3-0 lead turned into a nervy finish at 3-2, but it was overall a fantastic away win for the Steelmen, who continue their unbeaten start to the season heading into this weekends Emirates FA Cup First Qualifying Clash at Colney Heath!
