STEELMEN TAKE GOALS TO NEWCASTLE

STEELMEN TAKE GOALS TO NEWCASTLE

David Tilley15 Apr 2018 - 19:34

NEWCASTLE TOWN 2 CORBY TOWN 4

Steven Leslie played in Zac Allen and the teenager calmly stroked the ball past Gill.

Corby Town stretched their unbeaten run to four games with this ultimately comfortable victory in Staffordshire. Manager Steve Kinniburgh continued to turn to the club's teenagers as Dan Smith, Dean McBride, Ryan Bell and Zac Allen all started the game.
The first attempt on goal came from the Steelmen but Connor Kennedy's shot sailed harmlessly wide.
Play then switched to the other end where Dan Smith made a routine save from Rod Orlando-Young. In the 7th minute the hosts won a left wing corner and Luke Askey rose highest to head them into the lead.
Corby responded well with Jordan Crawford taking the ball around goalkeeper Raajan Gill but being forced too wide to direct it goalwards and Matt Lowe cleared the danger. Then, with twelve minutes on the clock, Crawford fired in a speculative effort from well outside the penalty area which Gill could only help into the net.
Within a further four minutes Newcastle were back in front as a right wing centre by Alex Curtis was headed in at the far post by Will Bailey. The hosts then had a great opportunity to go further ahead when a long throw by Orlando-Young was scrambled off the line by the Corby defence.
The game continued to ebb and flow and just before the half hour mark Steven Leslie played in Zac Allen and the teenager calmly stroked the ball past Gill for his first senior goal. Minutes Later the youth team prospect almost claimed a second but on this occasion his shot passed inches wide of the goal.
The Steelmen lived up to their growing reputation as a second half team with another strong display after the interval and just six minutes in they went ahead for the first time. Ryan Bell played the ball to Leslie just outside the right edge of the penalty area and he curled in a delightful effort which deceived Gill as it went in off the underside of the crossbar.
Newcastle briefly threatened a fightback as Luke Askey headed just over the bar and skipper James Askey nodded in following another dangerous Orlando-Young throw-in but was penalised for a push on Jamie Anton.
Steelmen captain Anton forced a decent save from Gill who then denied Sam Warburton with three blocks in quick succession. The loose ball was then picked up by Philip Trainer inside the penalty area and when the Steelmen substitute had his legs taken from beneath him by Port Vale loanee Luke Dennis referee Mr Rob Hathaway had no choice but to point to the spot.
Following Crawford's failure in midweek it was Leslie who resumed penalty taking duties and he made no mistake as he sent Gill the wrong way with his kick.
