Corby Town once again overturned a half time deficit to pick up three points away at Barton Rovers and move up into second place in the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central. Craig Hill returned in goal but the Steelmen were still without seven first teamers and gave debuts to James Tague (on a month's loan from Basford United), Lewis White (Shepshed Dynamo) and Ross McParland (Dunkirk). With Oliver Robinson and Tommy Yorston each making only their second appearance and Elliot Sandy again starting in the centre of defence it was a barely recognisable Corby XI which took to the field at Sharpenhoe Road.
Hill had already made an excellent one-handed save from Bradley Bell before the home side went ahead in the 27th minute through a hotly disputed penalty. There seemed minimal contact as Victor Osobu went down inside the area but it was enough for the referee to point to the spot and Connor Vincent converted the kick.
Jordon Crawford had a shot saved by Niall Cooper after 37 minutes and four minutes later Connor Furey cut inside Jerome Jibodu to fire in an effort which beat the goalkeeper but struck the foot of the post.
During the half time interval Steelmen manager Gary Mills made the decision to switch Sandy back to his usual position in attack and the game was transformed as the Corby attack became a more dangerous combination.
The 52nd minute goal which brought the Steelmen back into the game was, however, a personal triumph for 19-year-old debutant Tague. The highly rated former Derby County youngster produced some neat footwork on the edge of the area to set up Crawford for a shot which appeared to be blocked by the hand of Kai Phelan. The shouts of "handball" were still in the Corby throats when Tague picked up the loose ball and fired a low shot into the corner of the net.
Five minutes later the Steelmen struck what proved to be the winning goal when Sandy played the ball through to Crawford and his curling shot found the net with unerring accuracy.
By this time "Crawf" was on fire and he hit another shot narrowly wide before forcing Cooper into a sharp save. The experienced 'keeper then did well to keep out a fierce drive by Sandy and Callum Westwood ended a mazy run with a shot which did not do justice to the build-up.
The hosts did have their moments but very few of their efforts troubled Hill in the Corby goal. He did make one good save from a close range shot while Crawford repeated his feat of a week earlier by clearing the ball off the line.
With Rovers pushing forward in search of an equaliser in the latter stages they left themselves open to being caught on the break - with speedy substitute McParland looking the likeliest Steelman to benefit.
On one occasion he appeared third favourite to reach a through ball but outpaced centre backs Phelan and Lewis Thomas. Corby once again appealed for a penalty when the latter sent him crashing to the turf and although the initial contact probably took place a fraction outside the area the Steelmen were not even awarded the free kick it certainly was.
