Update on Yesterdays Press Release

Update on Yesterdays Press Release

James McCafferty9 Apr - 16:00

Following our press release yesterday, we would like to take the opportunity to clarify a number of points raised by our valued and loyal supporters.

Yesterday’s announcement represents the beginning of a long and exciting journey—not only for the football club, but for the wider community of Corby. It reflects a shared ambition to build a stronger, more inclusive, and sustainable future for everyone connected to the club.

As has been consistently recognised by both official and independent coaches across all sections, there is a collective belief that we are stronger together and united in our desire to progress as one club.

These discussions have been happening between the sections and the CIC for several months and we believe the sticking point of financial visibility has been answered by the proposal for the appointment if a treasure from within the sections who will manage the purchasing and movement of monies when necessary and agreed.

To access the funding required to enhance our facilities—including the expansion of the existing main stand, the development of a new clubhouse and facilities block, and the provision of multiple all-weather pitches—it is essential that all sections operate under the Community Interest Company (CIC) structure.

We are aware that some concerns have been raised regarding the allocation of finances, particularly in relation to the First Team. We would like to reassure all supporters that, as clearly outlined in Section 5.3 of the CIC governing document, no funds will be used to support the First Team.

Each section will retain control of its own finances, as is currently the case. The key difference under the CIC structure is the opportunity for greater collaboration, enabling sections to support one another where appropriate, following open discussion and mutual agreement. Our long-term vision is to see every team proudly wearing the same kit and badge, representing the town of Corby with pride and unity.

These discussions have been ongoing for several months, with financial governance emerging as a key area of focus. To ensure transparency and build trust, all sections have been offered representation through a single appointed representative on the CIC board, ensuring every section has a collective voice at board level.

In addition, sections have been given the opportunity to collectively appoint a single treasurer—someone they know and trust—to oversee financial management across the sections.

This approach ensures that day-to-day financial operations, including payments, transfers, and account access, remain consistent with current practices, while addressing concerns raised, including those from the Ladies and Girls section.

Governance remains central to this process. The club fully supported the Ladies and Girls section’s decision last summer to operate independently with the Northamptonshire Football Association (NFA), while maintaining a connection to the wider club. This collaborative approach ensured continued access to certain funding opportunities, while still benefiting from shared provisions such as FA accreditation across all sections.

We are also reviewing the JPL sector of the club and this will fall under the broader football committee under the CIC moving forward.

As part of this evolving structure, there have been occasions where additional clarity has been helpful to ensure a shared understanding across all sections. In response, the club has used its official channels to provide updates and outline ongoing developments. This highlights the importance of clear, aligned communication and the need to continue strengthening collaboration across all areas of the club.

We have also noted questions regarding the level of support provided to youth teams. While we recognise that support has at times been limited, steps are already being taken to improve this, with a clear focus on building closer collaboration moving forward.

The club continues to manage key responsibilities such as affiliation and accreditation processes, while also delivering valuable experiences for young players. These include mascot opportunities, including matchday access, meeting players, and staff, dressing room tours, and walking out in front of supporters.

We have begun to respond to requests for player engagement at training sessions, with initial steps already taken; we are looking to build on this further in the future.

In addition, significant work has been undertaken behind the scenes to develop the CIC, which will unlock substantial funding opportunities to improve facilities at Steel Park—an investment that will directly benefit young players across Corby.

At the heart of all of this is effective communication, which remains vital to ensuring our collective success moving forward.

We fully recognise and appreciate the dedication shown by each section over many years. Volunteers have given significant amounts of their time, effort, and resources to build and sustain their teams. However, to move forward and realise the full potential of the club, it is essential that we come together under a single, unified structure. Progress of this scale cannot be achieved with multiple independent boards; it requires shared governance, collective responsibility, and the support of all those who want to see football in Corby thrive.

It is also important not to lose sight of the wider opportunities this initiative presents. The proposed development of a SEND school, providing 60–80 places, represents a significant step forward for both the town and the club, reinforcing our commitment to inclusivity and community impact.

To confirm, the CIC has held the lease for Steel Park since the construction of the ground and will also hold the lease for the proposed SEND school. The CIC is responsible for raising 40% of the required funding, which will unlock access to the remaining 60% through external funding partners. Significant work is ongoing to bridge this funding gap and deliver on the long-term vision for the club and community.

A key requirement of funders is clear and transparent financial governance. For this reason, it is essential that all sections operate under the CIC structure. Without this unified approach—where financial activity is transparent and managed appropriately—these funding opportunities will not be accessible. This includes ensuring that funds are not distributed across multiple independent processes without oversight, and that no finances are allocated to the First Team, in line with CIC regulations.

We would like to reassure all stakeholders that neither the CIC nor the Corby Town First Team will access or utilise funds belonging to individual sections. On the contrary, this structure is designed to unlock significant investment and create enhanced facilities and opportunities that will benefit every section of the club.

We are also actively seeking to build partnerships within the local community. As part of the funding requirements, the facilities must be made available to local schools and clubs, and we would welcome the opportunity to hear from organisations interested in forming a partnership.

If you have any further questions or would like to receive a copy of the CIC document, we encourage you to contact us directly at info@corbytown.co.uk. While we do our best to monitor and respond via social media, this is not always possible, and direct communication ensures your queries are addressed promptly.

We have also attached the CIC document so everyone understands what it is.
