The Steelwomen could not give departing manager George Joyce a winning send off despite taking the lead in the 26th minute, defender Claire Stancliffe with a delicate lob. Bungay reacted quickly and equalised 3 minutes later, heading home from a corner.
Like the first, the second half was a tight affair but it was Bungay who found the winner in the 87th minute and will enjoy their trip back to Suffolk after progressing to the next round. A cruel blow for a hardworking Corby side but positives to take from defeat with the new season round the corner.
Joyce shared his thoughts on his final game in charge due to a job promotion and relocation, “I thought we started the game well and Claire scores a fantastic goal to give us the 1-0 lead but we just did not defend the corner for their equaliser. Second half we came out and was on top for a large part of the half but we just could not find the breakthrough goal we needed or deserved. I thought we was very unlucky to get hit on the break for the other team to nick it right at the end of the game. I would like to wish everyone at Corby Town all the best for the future and upcoming season from players to staff and hopefully I’ll be able to pop down to a game in the not so distant future!”.
Corby Town Ladies would like to thank and wish George well for the future as well as congratulate Bungay Town Ladies on their win this afternoon.
