Big win for the steelwomen keeps the pressure on at the top.

Today was a must win game for our steelwomen after losing ground on the leaders a couple of weeks ago. It was always going to be tough playing the league leaders who were unbeaten in the league this season, to make it even more difficult our steelwomen where without their number 1 and 2 keepers so massive credit to Hannah and Shannon who took spells in goal to support the team.

Special thanks to our Mascots Corby Town Girls U9 Lynx’s and U10 Tigers who walked the team out today.

The game started well for the steelwomen who come out of the blocks quickly and showed their intent with some great possession and periods of play in the opening 20 minutes but we were lacking that clinical edge. Then on the 25th minute a great cross from Amy and slotted home nicely for Maddie to open the scoring with her first goal at home. Was well deserved with the periods we had in the opening 25 minutes. This was unfortunately very short lived as Crick responded well and were level within 2 minutes. Crick started to take control of the half and had some great passages of play and were starting to dominate the midfield. But anything coming through our defence Hannah was sweeping up excellently then with 5 minutes left of the half a sin bin for Crick but we just couldn’t capitalise before the break and the half ended 1-1.

Second half started and we needed to utilise our player advantage for the remaining 5 mins of the sin bin and we certainly did. With Shannon now in goal Hannah came into the middle and we started to regain control and towards the end of the sin bin Hannah struck the ball home for Corby’s second and within minutes Hannah struck the crossbar but without VAR the ref decided it hadn’t crossed the line. Corby continued to keep the pressure on but Crick were dangerous in the break and with their speed up front were a constant threat then a fantastic save from Shannon down to her right at full stretch. This galvanised the team and with some changes in personnel on the 65th minute a great cross from Ollie straight into Ellie’s path to calmly make it 3. This spurred on Crick and to give credit where credit is due really come on strong but defensively we stood strong and on the final whistle a great win for our steelwomen. Although Crick are still in the driving seat to claim the league our steelwomen are certainly in their rear view mirror. Special mentions to Shannon who performed excellently in goal and also in left back position when required and to Ollie who today was a constant thorn in Crick’s side, her pace and precise crossing was on point today.

Final Score 3-1 to Corby.
