And so, the U15s embarked on an early morning journey to face the Woburn & Wavendon U15 Lionesses, with hopes high and spirits even higher. The girls, fresh off a triumphant opening game, were eager to secure their second win of the season.
But the match began with a few jitters. A couple of rushed plays and misplaced passes saw them fall behind 1-0, courtesy of a quick throw-in and a parry from Poppy in goal, leaving the Woburn & Wavendon player with an easy finish into an empty net. It was the wake-up call Corby needed.
Just three minutes later, Leila danced past a couple of defenders and was fouled, earning Corby a free kick from 35 yards out. Up stepped Lilly-Ella, who delivered a looping free kick that sailed over the Woburn & Wavendon keeper, making it 1-1. Game on!
Corby began to find their rhythm, their passing crisp and their intent clear. They peppered the Woburn & Wavendon goal with shots, but the breakthrough remained elusive. Meanwhile, Woburn & Wavendon’s number 20 continued to pose a threat on the counter.
Then, on the stroke of 29 minutes, Lilly-Ella played a sublime ball out to Tia, who struck it sweetly from the edge of the box. The ball nestled into the far post, and Corby were 2-1 up. The first half ended with both teams trading blows, but Corby held firm.
The second half was a masterclass from Corby. They dominated possession, their passing a joy to watch. On 46 minutes, Lilly-Ella’s corner took a wicked deflection off a Woburn & Wavendon defender and found the back of the net, 3-1.
Corby were cruising now. Leila was pulling the strings in midfield, and the shots kept coming. On 51 minutes, Leila played a perfect ball to Lilly-Ella, who smashed it home to make it 4-1. The Woburn & Wavendon keeper was kept busy throughout the second half, being tested from every angle. Woburn & Wavendon tried to force their way back into the game but Corby’s defence stood strong and tall demanding "you shall not pass!"
A top performance from Corby, from the commanding presence of the goalkeeper to the rock-solid defence, the creative midfield, and the electric wingers and forwards.
