Corby Town began their pre-season programme with an entertaining Desmond (2-2) against AFC Welwyn at Bedford Town F.C. Manager Gar Setchell gave debuts in the starting line up to former Hinckley Leicester Road trio Jake Laban, Louis Gill and Aaron Nuttall and had Tyrone Lewthwaite chomping at the bit on the bench.
The Steelmen began brightly with Connor Tomlinson shooting into the side netting and Gary Stohrer hitting an effort narrowly wide inside the opening five minutes. Welwyn's highly rated goalkeeper Ashton Broome-Alexander dived bravely at the feet of Nuttall as Corby continued to attack but it was the home team who took the lead through centre forward Corey Wilson.
Corby were soon level, however, when a left wing corner dropped invitingly inside the box and Tomlinson turned the ball in. Equality lasted only a matter of minutes before the referee spotted a handball on the edge of the penalty area and after consulting his linesman pointed to the spot - and Wilson sent Laban the wrong way. As half time approached Corby netted their second when Tomlinson centred from the right and Tendai Diare headed in.
Laban made a good diving save at the start of the second period but Corby went on to dominate the half. Joe Butterworth had a free kick turned round the post by Broom-Alexander and the 'keeper also kept out a Nuttall effort with his feet.
Tomlinson and Nuttall combined well to set up Spencer Edwards but he hit his close range effort against the goalkeeper's legs. When Lewthwaite entered the fray he made his considerable presence felt but their was to be no further scoring.
